July 17, 2011 – Ed Hein (right), Chairperson of the Central Bucks Bicycle Club’s (CBBC) Grant Committee, presents a check in the amount of $5,000 to Ryan Oelkers, co-founder of the Cadence Cycling Foundation. Pictured behind are youths participating in the Arsenal Criterium Race at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

As part of its annual Grant Program, CBBC provided the donation to help the Cadence Cycling Foundation purchase road bikes for a competitive cycling program serving disadvantaged youth. The program uses competitive cycling as a tool to reach kids in the Greater Philadelphia area -- to teach them life skills, help them develop healthy lifestyle behavior, increase their interest in academics, and establish life goals post-high school.

"The Cadence Cycling Foundation is very appreciative of the support from CBBC,” said Oelkers. “Without wonderful supporters like CBBC, many of these kids would have extremely limited access to positive afterschool program activities - especially ones helping youth improve their health and well being."

CBBC is an active member of Bucks County and surrounding communities, with bicycling as the backdrop for this activism. As one of the many ways that CBBC supports its community, the CBBC grant program awards financial grants to organizations whose programs best fulfill the mission of the Club.

CBBC, which donates a significant portion of the proceeds from its annual Covered Bridges Ride (scheduled for October 9, 2011), has awarded grants in excess of $83,000 over the past decade. In this most recent grant cycle, CBBC provided a total of $6,095 in grants.

In addition to its Grant Program, CBBC “gives back” to the community in other ways:
• By building fund-raising teams that participate in charitable bicycling events such as the MS-150, American Cancer Society Ride, Tour de Cure and others.
• By participating in community clean-up programs including Adopt a Highway and Delaware Canal Clean-Up Day.
• By sharing holiday cheer, food and gifts with children at Christ Home for Children.
• By co-sponsoring the annual Doylestown Ride of Silence.
